Yo
How much will it cost to publish? With Ads costing $200 a page, how many do we need exactly?
One problem I found that potential advertisers had was that this might not be an ongoing publication. They want to know how many issues there will be and when they will come out. Its not very beneficial tht it comes out at the end of the semester when everybody is leaving. It'd be better for them if it came out at the beginning of a semester so students would actually be around to maybe buy something from these companies/restaurants. Lets keep trying hard to sell ads! Another thing to think about is turning this into an online magazine because we already have a URL. Check out this online Mag @ www.evilmonito.com . Look at the departments on the right side. We could make a pretty nifty online publication. Just a thought.

NOTES ON OUR CRITIQUE
I DID NOT PROOF, SO PLEASE EXCUSE ANY SPELLING/GRAMMATICAL ERRORS
Jazz estate
Rework? Black colour, maybe photographs…make them more like the last.
Fourth page: rework text layout, maybe font (thins out too much and blends into the black…
Maybe photoshop the photos? Grunge it up…make it vintage? Duotone? Mess with the levels and curves?
No full spread spanning two pages! White bar in the middle. Pay attention to the live space in the center of each spread…inner margin will not print….will be white.
Gypsy kitchen
Look at font…doesn’t work. Change it up….
Background makes the content less impactful distracting.
Break the “containery” feeling.
Change the treatment of the bricks (brick elements? White space? Less saturation?) maybe they should only be on one side of the spread?
Truth in Fiction
Needs texture in the background….
Too containery, like the gypsy kitchen.
Header…make more engaging…integrate
Work on the yellow lines…
Softer drop shadows? Seem too heavy.
Jen kuhn: jigsaw
Photograph…not too flattering
Change the header font
Integrate photo spread page to a grid system…maybe pare it down to two or three larger images
Maybe eliminate color squares? More like the color/picture square on the second page…?
Watch the lines, and make sure they match up…watch how they interact with magins.
Nice floating image on the last page.
Include entire color boxes on the bottom of the last page
No need to title it “jen’s current work”
Alchemist
Quote follow curve or lock to grid. Scale up the point size and loosen the leading.
Credit crisis
Edit illustrative text (spell check)
More volume and depth
Cut and paste
Juju
Lighten midtones
Streamline heading with rest of articles
Consumer
Unify red color blocks…make sure the top and bottom space is consistent
Lighten body copy?
White margin on right….extend further?
Flip color on the side bar quote
Ccc
Borders on photos…exclude?
Center ‘C’ in the white box?
Rework photos…bottom two look the same.
Don’t put in rectangular frames? Follow the line of the green elements?
Make the photos black and white? More like the house picture?

Hi Dialect Team:
Thursday, March 26 is a work day. If you need to sell ads, do it! If you need to meet up with other folks, do it! If you need help, ask for it! If you need to see me, let me know in an email. I will be in and out, but I am more than happy to make an appointment to be in class during our class time if you let me know. We are not meeting formally at 12:30 pm.
KEEP AUDREY, COREY, MONICA AND DENA UPDATED ON YOUR AD PROGRESS.
Due Tuesday:
The entire magazine will be printed and pinned to the back board in spreads by 12:30 pm. This is not optional. All students are required to attend this class meeting. If your writing is not finished your piece may not get published. Please be in communication with Ben Roach regarding your work. Ben, if you need help, gather up some people so you don't have to do more than your share.
Let me know if I can do anything: advice on how to follow through on ad sales; support over the weekend; opening doors at school for work and access to the printer, etc. It's GO TIME. Be proactive.
Kelsey and Keegan are away for a few days: please support them by picking up any work that they have on their plates for the time being.
Thank you, and see you and the magazine in its glory on Tuesday, with reports of a lot of ad sales! Let's make this happen!
Rebecca.

CITE has a mailbox!
CITE Magazine
Union Box 260
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
PO Box 413

The combination lock is pretty tricky. The box is very similar to the resident mailboxes in Sandburg Hall, so if you've never lived in the dorms you almost definately will have trouble opening our mailbox.
Since this is a public blog I'm not going to post the combination, but feel free to email me and ask me for the numbers.

LOGO ! !
So this is what we decided about the Logo, if we can really get it done soon, then we will redo it, but if more then a couple weeks go past we are going to remain with the existing logo. We did decide that using Franklin Gothic would be a great font type to use seeing since it was created in Milwaukee.
So we did a large word list of what Cite, Sight, and Site mean and narrowed it down to three key concepts: Look, Place, Bridge
If everyone can work together and send out ideas for how to connect all three into a logo while still remembering to relay it back to our mission statement.
So if anyone has some ideas in the next week please please through them up here ! ! !
Lets do this!
thursday's class
I apologize but I'm not going to be in today. I have to take my daughter to see her pediatrician, but wanted to give you an update. Me and Nydia both have contacts in the economics department that we plan to work with on the "recession illustration". I am very excited to see what we can come up with.
I know we have been pretty good at keeping up with the blog, so please post an assignment for me to do this weekend! Also, any one who has their article ready to be edited can send it to me at picray2002@yahoo.com.
Sorry I won't be there, can't wait to hear what you've all come up with!

Cohesive Articles and Images
For articles lined up I currently have:
1. Growing Plants in an Urban environment
I had an older article from last semester from a girl who wrote me an article about tips on growing food in an urban environment. It is really segmented for some reason, into different sections. I am going to edit it, but I think there could be some great imagery involved!
2. Drawing Series and interview with Artist: Lindsay Marx
My roomate Lindsay Marx is becoming a pretty involved artist in Milwaukee. She represents the peck school of the arts in the Student Association as well as one of the founders of Artist alliance, an artist group on campus. She did a semester long large scale drawing series that I would love to do some what of a photography essay on.
3. Comic book: By Rollin Kunz, whatever topic we want
I also have another roomate who left UWM 2 years ago, and he was a pretty well known illustrator on campus, he one a couple big time scholarships for his work. He would love to contribute with a comic book, that can be about whatever we want. A topic that really ads to the rest of the content in the magazine.
One thing I really want to do with with issue is have one large idea broken down into image, spreads, and articles = making it impossible to be uncohesive, it needs to have a good rhythm! I think on Thursday we should all present a design brief of out article ideas and look at all the design briefs together in a group. Then sort through which ones are working with the others and which ones are not. This way right from the start we all have one idea or goal that we are trying to achieve.
* * * Also, I did not take very good notes from Liz Trapp, but I do have a lot from memory that I can write down. We should really have what we learned that day from that day, because it was a lot. If someone else took really good notes, I urge them to get them up here! !

Possible Article
I have several ideas for articles. The one I'm most excited about is a piece on my friend and coworker's bookstore. That may sound boring, but it's actually like an alternative bookstore in the Riverwest community. This friend of mine happens to be an anarchist and most of the material in his store is pretty radical. Needless to say, it's not your typical bookstore. I think it would be great to interview him and find out more.

EXECUTE SUMMARY
CITE offers a unique opportunity to bridge gaps that exist between disciplines on campus. By combining culture, community, and design CITE creates a new forum to display the work and accomplishments of students from every college and program within the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. More than just a showcase of student talent, the magazine seeks to break barriers that exist between disciplines and create new relationships. These partnerships allow students to explore previously intangible potential. Within the growing network of society, individuals can no longer operate in an isolated environment, CITE seeks to become the beacon that brings individual students together to form a unique interactive and collaborative effort to better serve the needs of the campus as a whole. It is the magazine’s unique format, content, and identity, that create the platform for these connections to be made.
By offering this unique insight into the machinations of the University, CITE also hopes to engage participants throughout Milwaukee as a whole and contribute to the effort in bringing the city to a new level of appreciation on a national level. Every person who picks up the magazine becomes a participant in this effort and we encourage everyone involved to become active in engaging this process of collaboration. No longer can periodicals exist as isolated identities and CITE hopes to take the first step in breaking down the tradition of the individual user experience and create a new forum for individuals to come together in a way never possible before. The future holds infinite potential for creating new connection and CITE aims to be the leader in this effort. By allowing the reader to become a user, and actively deconstruct and reconstruct the content of the magazine, they become active participants in the collaborative process that is CITE.

Possible Article Idea
I have a contact at a new advertising agency in Milwaukee. It's called Jigsaw. Their art director, Steven Worl, is supposed to be amazing and I think it would be sweet to get inside his head.
I haven't contacted him yet but I'm sure he wouldn't mind if we wanted to interview and possibly take some photos inside their agency.
It would also be a good way for them to get their name out there and recognized amoung young and upcoming artists.
Let me know what you guys think and I can get something set up!

Interesting 'Old magazine info...'
Came across this article from The New York Times. It was published in 1897 so it has some good info on early magazines.

Also this site is an excessive timeline of media events, kind of interesting as well.

I don't condone this, but here's an unusual medium for print making: http://www.craftzine-digital.com/craft/vol04/?pg=125
I think an article on this subject would definitely get some attention.
I'm imagining a fictional piece on squid farming and ink harvesting, or a mock article about the ballpoint pen industry attempting to go green. Of course, since it would be a fictional piece, we could come up with a more humane way of harvesting the ink that doesn't involve the slaughter of innocent squids. I know it sounds crazy, but with a little Photoshop work and some clever writing, this could have a lot of potential.
