Yo

How much will it cost to publish? With Ads costing $200 a page, how many do we need exactly?
One problem I found that potential advertisers had was that this might not be an ongoing publication. They want to know how many issues there will be and when they will come out. Its not very beneficial tht it comes out at the end of the semester when everybody is leaving. It'd be better for them if it came out at the beginning of a semester so students would actually be around to maybe buy something from these companies/restaurants. Lets keep trying hard to sell ads! Another thing to think about is turning this into an online magazine because we already have a URL. Check out this online Mag @ www.evilmonito.com . Look at the departments on the right side. We could make a pretty nifty online publication. Just a thought.

NOTES ON OUR CRITIQUE

HERE ARE SOME NOTES ON OUR DISCUSSION....

I DID NOT PROOF, SO PLEASE EXCUSE ANY SPELLING/GRAMMATICAL ERRORS

Jazz estate

Rework? Black colour, maybe photographs…make them more like the last.

Fourth page: rework text layout, maybe font (thins out too much and blends into the black…

Maybe photoshop the photos? Grunge it up…make it vintage? Duotone? Mess with the levels and curves?

No full spread spanning two pages! White bar in the middle. Pay attention to the live space in the center of each spread…inner margin will not print….will be white.

Gypsy kitchen

Look at font…doesn’t work. Change it up….

Background makes the content less impactful distracting.
Break the “containery” feeling.
Change the treatment of the bricks (brick elements? White space? Less saturation?) maybe they should only be on one side of the spread?

Truth in Fiction

Needs texture in the background….
Too containery, like the gypsy kitchen.
Header…make more engaging…integrate
Work on the yellow lines…
Softer drop shadows? Seem too heavy.

Jen kuhn: jigsaw
Photograph…not too flattering
Change the header font
Integrate photo spread page to a grid system…maybe pare it down to two or three larger images
Maybe eliminate color squares? More like the color/picture square on the second page…?
Watch the lines, and make sure they match up…watch how they interact with magins.
Nice floating image on the last page.
Include entire color boxes on the bottom of the last page
No need to title it “jen’s current work”

Alchemist

Quote follow curve or lock to grid. Scale up the point size and loosen the leading.

Credit crisis

Edit illustrative text (spell check)
More volume and depth
Cut and paste

Juju

Lighten midtones
Streamline heading with rest of articles

Consumer
Unify red color blocks…make sure the top and bottom space is consistent
Lighten body copy?
White margin on right….extend further?
Flip color on the side bar quote

Ccc
Borders on photos…exclude?
Center ‘C’ in the white box?
Rework photos…bottom two look the same.
Don’t put in rectangular frames? Follow the line of the green elements?
Make the photos black and white? More like the house picture?

Hi Dialect Team:

Thursday, March 26 is a work day. If you need to sell ads, do it! If you need to meet up with other folks, do it! If you need help, ask for it! If you need to see me, let me know in an email. I will be in and out, but I am more than happy to make an appointment to be in class during our class time if you let me know. We are not meeting formally at 12:30 pm.

KEEP AUDREY, COREY, MONICA AND DENA UPDATED ON YOUR AD PROGRESS.

Due Tuesday:

The entire magazine will be printed and pinned to the back board in spreads by 12:30 pm. This is not optional. All students are required to attend this class meeting. If your writing is not finished your piece may not get published. Please be in communication with Ben Roach regarding your work. Ben, if you need help, gather up some people so you don't have to do more than your share.

Let me know if I can do anything: advice on how to follow through on ad sales; support over the weekend; opening doors at school for work and access to the printer, etc. It's GO TIME. Be proactive.

Kelsey and Keegan are away for a few days: please support them by picking up any work that they have on their plates for the time being.

Thank you, and see you and the magazine in its glory on Tuesday, with reports of a lot of ad sales! Let's make this happen!

Rebecca.

LOGO!

http://www.scribd.com/doc/8705921/2009-Typographic-Calendar

i think most of the people who showed up to class today liked the idea Ben had for a logo. This is a good place to start if you want to make a version of your own for us to look at. On each page of the calendar I believe it says what font was used.

Hope it helps and lets get this logo done!

say what?
